The movie's music was originally Oscar-nominated for for Best Original Dramatic Score in 1972, but the Academy disqualified it from competing in that category when it was discovered that composer Nino Rota had cribbed the film's popular "Love Theme" from his score from the 1957 Italian film Fortunella.

Soundtrack Q & A
Q: I am listening to "La Forza del Destino" on the Met broadcast. I seem to remember hearing music from that opera during the Baptism scene in this movie. Recently when I saw it on TV there was another theme - non-operatic - not as powerful. Am I dreaming or has there been a change in the soundtrack? (from Sally in Ottawa, Canada)
A: Sally, it's entirely possible you're not dreaming. Director/co-writer Francis Coppola re-edited the 1st 2 films in the Godfather Trilogy into a TV version called The Godfather Saga (which still shows up on TV from time to time) back in 1977. While he was at it, he may have changed some of the music cues. I can't say for sure - I haven't seen this version in a really long time (i.e., 20+ years). Anyway, this may have been the version you caught on TV. (thanks to Art Turner, Rockford, IL USAadd more info

Q: Right after Michael kills Solozo and the dirty cop, he runs out and a dramatic score is played ("Michael's Theme"). Right after that, we see the corpses and a montage sequence begins showing newspaper headlines and the Corleone Family eating and so on. During that sequence, a piano piece is heard which happens to be played by one of the mafiosi during the montage. I would like to know the name of that particular piece. (from Red Baron in Buenos Aires, Argentina)
A: I have heard from my searchings around the internet that it MIGHT be called "This Loneliness" and available only on a rare LP vinyl album called Godfather's Wedding Album or something like that. There is a funny video on YouTube with the music. Just search for "The Godfather Mattresses Montage" and you'll find it. I honestly don't know if that's the title of the song but I do know that it was played by Carmine Coppola and he may or may not have written it. That's all I've found from my searches. (thanks to Rastapopulous, TXadd more info
A: Yes I too have heard it is called "This Loneliness".... This piece is just about impossible to find on record and even more impossible to find the sheet music for. Very frustrating... but I have also heard it is on the wedding album. (thanks to Jon, New Yorkadd more info
A: This is the best I could find of the Matresses Montage. (thanks to Skip, Northeast New Jerseyadd more info
A: "This Loneliness" is on the soundtrack, The Godfather's Family Wedding Album. (thanks to Kathy, Valdosta, GA, USAadd more info

A: Check out and search "This Loneliness. Godfather piano scene" or "Godfather 1 - This Loneliness". By the way, for those who don't move in gangster circles, "mattresses" is mafiaspeak for safe houses. (thanks to rdr555, London, Englandadd more info

Q: Hi, I'm trying to find out the song playing when Tom goes to see the movie producer in California. It sounds like big band and is instrumental only (at least what's played in the scene). Anyone? (from Shawn in Burlingame, CA)

Q: What's the instrumental music playing after the daughter is shot? The screen shows a few shots of the Godfather dancing with his favourite females. The musical is a classical piece. What's the name? (from Henk in Tulsa, Oklahoma, USA)
A: pietro mascagni - cavalleria rusticana intermezzo (thanks to enz , ny add more info

Q: What is the song playing in the Baptism scene? Is it "La Forza Del Destino"? (from Dustin in Lubbock, Texas, USA)
A: Two organ pieces are interleaved. Ecclesiastical scenes are underpinned with simple chord progressions (very well played); the J. S. Bach Passacaglia and Fugue in C minor (BWV 582) plays during the murder scenes. Notice the increased use of reeds during the Bach passages, very effective registration. Francis Ford Coppola and his father are musical geniuses. (thanks to ContraTrumpet, Minnesotaadd more info
