Q: | I was wondering if anyone noticed the slight de-tuning of one of the piano notes in the interpretation of "The Crisis" by Ennio Morricone during the love scene in this movie... My guess is that it was de-tuned on purpose, but I cannot find any information online. Does anyone know more about it? (from tristan in brussels, belgium) |
A: | It was definitely de-tuned on purpose. I actually thought it was a minor 3rd, which then resolved on beat 4? Perhaps I'm wrong... (thanks to Gabrielle, Florida, United States) add more info |
A: | I just listened to it, and it's definitely an interval of a halfstep (E sharp and F sharp on the 3rd beat of the D major chord) not a minor 3rd as I inaccurately stated before. The half step and the tritone are considered to be the most dissonant intervals in music, which is why you thought the piano to be "de-tuned". The first time it occurs is on a D major chord, then B minor, then G minor, and so on throughout the composition. Hope this helps! (thanks to Gabrielle, Florida, United States) add more info |
A: | I'm not a musician but what you call de-tuning is the purposeful injection of painful dissonance, the blending of Ben's love for Emily with his irreconcilable pain, remorse and redemptive mission. The power of the entire movie derives from these few sad broken notes. Perhaps the most appropriate musical selection found in any film. (thanks to Timothy Kosnoff, Issaquah, WA USA) add more info |
