Soundtrack Q & A
Q: I am trying to find the aria sung by a female vocalist that Billy Kwan (Linda Hunt) played for Guy Hamilton (Mel Gibson) when Hamilton was visiting Kwan's house in this movie. It may have the word September in the title, "September Song"??? Thanks for your help. (from cam in Savannah, GA, USA)
A: "Beim Schlafengehen", from the Last Four Songs of Richard Strauss. (Interestingly, the credits in the movie and the video I saw called it "September", another of the four songs, but that was incorrect.) The selection in the movie was sung by Kiri Te Kanawa with Colin Davis and the London Philharmonic. But, if you truly love that piece, get the recording by Gundula Janowitz with Herbert von Karajan - it will tear your heart out. (thanks to KiriFan, Houston, Texasadd more info

Q: I am trying to track down the stunning / evocative music that is playing in the film but is not even mentioned in the credits - nor is it mentioned on the LP released in 1983 by That's Entertainment Production Ltd.. The particular piece starts just as Sigourney Weaver gets into the car driven by Mel Gibson. They then drive off through the night, crashing through a road block of blazing barrels and bullets. I assume it is missing because it was not a GAMELAN ORCHESTRA piece - but would love to get hold of a CD with this track on it. Can you help? (from Howard in Bedsfordshire uk)
A: "L'enfant" by Vangelis :) (thanks to Thep, stockholmadd more info

Q: Why doesn't the soundtrack of this movie include the Vangelis tune, the Strauss opera piece and even some of the rock and roll, such as "Be bop a lula"? I bought a soundtrack a few years ago and was disappointed and surprised that the music wasn't recognizeable from the movie. Any info on why the accurate soundtrack was not released?
