Soundtrack Q & A
Q: Who does the guitar version of "Sweet Dreams (Of You)" over the end credits? (from FD§ in Scotland)
A: It's Roy Buchanan. He died back in the 70s or early 80s I think. Too much alcohol. I'm not sure which album. (thanks to Gavin, Boston, MA USAadd more info
A: Roy Buchanan hung himself in a jail cell in 1988. His music is amazing. (thanks to Dave, NY USadd more info
A: I actually think that it is the Hellecasters, actually I think that it is mainly Will Ray of the Hellecasters, that does that version of "Sweet Dreams"... as far as I could tell. (thanks to Alex, Boston, MA USAadd more info
A: Roy Buchanan does "Sweet Dreams," the first song on his self-titled album, which may have been his first major album. Roy was known as "the world's best unknown guitar player." Never made it big commercially. Rumored to have been asked to join the Stones, but then again everyone was rumored to have been asked to play with the Stones. (thanks to Wolfike, Dublin, OH, USAadd more info
A: Definitely Roy! It even says it in the final credits. He did hang himself in a jail cell the person who posted too much alcohol is doing Roy a diservice. And I don't know about the Stones but John Lennon did ask Roy to join his band with Yoko and Roy turned him down to continue playing with his own band The Snakestrechers. This is well known among people who have followed Roy Buchanan. (thanks to Joey, R.I.add more info
A: There is still some considerable debate about the cause of death. Yes, Roy was supposedly quite drunk. Who cares? The word is the death was suspicious due to how beat up he was. His family never bought the suicide angle. Some said he may have gotten the snot beat out of him by the cops and died in his cell. The hanging thing was said to cover up the brutality aspect. (thanks to dddmax, NY, NY, USAadd more info
A: It's definitely Roy Buchanan.... used to listen to the record back when I was a wee lad. He did hang himself in jail and I believe he actually gave lessons to a young Danny Gatton who continued to carry the torch of the telecaster! (thanks to Evil, MAadd more info
A: Sadly, Roy Buchanan hanged himself to death while in jail in Fairfax County, Virginia on August 14th, 1988. (thanks to NewYorker, New York Cityadd more info

Q: Who does the version of Pink Floyd's "Comfortably Numb" in the movie? (from Lee in US)
A: It is performed by Van Morrison and The Band. (thanks to matt, oahu, HIadd more info
A: Roger Waters, Van Morrison & The Band (Levon Helm & Rick Danko) on vocals and Snowy White & Rick DiFonzo on guitars. (thanks to Mr. Manu, hereadd more info
A: This song is from The Wall Live Berlin 1990. It's a live version. (thanks to victorio, Venezuelaadd more info
A: This version of the song was playing in the recent episode of The Sopranos when Christopher and Tony ran off the road and crashed, which ended up being Christopher's final scene. Just before the crash he stated how awesome The Departed soundtrack is. (thanks to Bob, Floridaadd more info

Q: What is the name of the opera/aria heard in this movie? Who's the composer? (from adrienne in portland oregon)
A: The opera is Gaetano Donizetti's "Lucia de Lammermoor" The part of it that they watch at the opera, and is then heard again, and yet again as the tune on Costello's cell phone, is the great sextet of the first act, which is known by its first several words, "Chi mi frena ..." (thanks to Larry, NYCadd more info
A: Apparently this music was used by Howard Hawks' in his gangster classic Scarface: Tony Camonte (Paul Muni) whistles "Chi me frena?" in the film's opening sequence, as he guns down a ganglord boss he's supposed to be bodyguarding. This, from Wikipedia. (thanks to GordonS, London UKadd more info

Q: What ever happened to the band The Human Beinz that do "Nobody But Me" in the movie? They are crankin. (from Prof Ed in New York)

A: It's Dvorak's "New World Symphony" Movement II! I knew I had played that somewhere before. Thank you! It was driving me crazy! (thanks to Ben, Duluth, MNadd more info
A: You are correct. The credits of the movie, however, incorrectly list it as a theme from Dvorak's Symphony No. 5. The New World Symphony is of course his 9th. (thanks to John, Albuquerqueadd more info

A: That's correct. the NYPD Plays "Going Home" in the movie. This is the tune they play at Police Officer's Line of Duty Funerals. Q: Why is "Gimme Shelter" - a song so prominently featured in the movie - not on the soundtrack album? (from mike in washington, dc)
A: It's the same reason the song is not on the OST albums for Casino, The Fan, Goodfellas, The War and others. The Rolling Stones demand impossibly high royalties for the song. Film companies ante up, but soundtrack labels can't afford it (probably has something to do with film company's needing to only license a portion of the song for the film (like just a few seconds), whereas the soundtrack label must license the entire song for the album). Short answer: $$$$$$$. (thanks to OSTfan, Burlingameadd more info

Q: What is the name of the song that plays during the scene where Jack Nicholson is putting the hand in a ziplock bag and talking to Leo Dicaprio? Q: I got a tricky one! I was watching some "making of" special about The Departed on the TV the other night and there was this beautiful instrumental playing when the actors were describing Madolyn character and there were scenes of her and Billy when it was playing.
