Q: | I have just watched my VHS copy and noticed a few songs have been changed in the movie. For example Tom Petty's "American Girl" has been replaced (don't know name of song), and Sammy Hagar's "Fast Times at Ridgemont High." Oingo Boingo's "Goodbye Goodbye," with another lame song. Does anyone know why? (from steve in ventura,ca,usa) |
A: | In 1982, the only secondary rights to songs used in movies negotiated at the time of filming were cable and broadcast TV rights. When VHS took off, many movie producers had to go and re-negotiate the contracts for the tunes - and often the RIAA asked for more than the studios wanted to pay... thus song replacement. This problem is rampant in movies filmed in the 70s and 80s. By the 1990s "videocassette" rights were part of the standard contracts when making movies, and in 1997 DVDs became boilerplate. Q: | I have a question (which Gunstar had previously asked) about the song that was replaced by "so Much In Love" in DVD versions of the movie. What song was that? I remember the first line of the song as: "As we walk hand in hand, through (something, something) land...." Can't remember the rest of it!
That song was definitely better than the one that replaced it! ...from Kurt in Statesboro, GA (answer Kurt's question) |
