Q: | Can anyone tell me, in some detail, what the music is like? I know it's jazz, but what kind of jazz? For instance, does the music sound similar to the jazz in the Bullitt soundtrack by Lalo Schifrin? I read the movie reviews of this 60's film on another website and most reviews said the score by Andre Previn was fabulous. Thanks for reading this. (from musicmad in Canada) |
A: | No, it's not at all like Lalo. While the score has some jazz elements, it's for full orchestra and is very much like Andre's other scores in this milieu. The main theme is haunting and bluesy with a trombone and trumpet lead (and two of the best soloists in the film scoring business). There are many wonderful dramatic scoring cues, some good source music cues, and a vocal version of the main theme. It's a fantastic score, one of Previn's greatest.
